That's right. If you listen to the radio even a little bit you've heard the song "I kissed a girl" by Katy Perry. Personally, I heard the song in a hotel bar in Montvale, NJ approximately 2 weeks ago. The difference is not that I like the song and you don't because we can all agree that it's a horrible song. The difference is when i went up to the jukebox in the hotel bar and saw "Katy Perry" playing that foolishness, I knew exactly who she was....
Before I continue...i have these looooooooong lost friends Michael and Benjamin. These dudes will have mansions next to mine in heaven and our kids are going to burn stuff and make forts in our huge collective backyard while Mikes dad makes chicken wings, and we sit around a card table drinking coffee and talking for eternity. That's basically how tight we were. Well anyways these guys are my bros 4-ev-r and that's importand because it was our undying man-love for each other that allowed the others to go along with one of our (usually mine) crazy ideas. We'd jump in our cars and randomly go to Chicago to see a show, or decide that we needed to order Boxing gloves on ebay at 1 a.m. to settle an argument as to who should move that was illegally parked after hours. It was like that.
Anyways, back to our story....rewind 7+ years. It's fall of 2001, november-ish and we're first-semester sophomores in college. Back then there was this thing called NAPSTER. You young-ones don't know napster but what it did was hook us up with mistitled songs and all kinds of foolishness. At some point I was downloading some songs to play for worship at CRU (we didn't call it "cru" back then) and i stumbled across a CD called Katy Hudson. Long story a bit shorter, I fell in love, and thought that although the album was overproduced, the songs were good. And btw it was like a worship album. All totally christian songs and all that.
This is where our foolish adventures referenced above come in. So I don't know how it happened but BeboNorman, Shaun Groves, and Katy Hudson were touring so one night so we decide to go and see them play at Elmbrook (maybe). I don't know how it came about. Maybe Mike wanted to see Bebo Norman, but i think it was more along the lines of i had a mad crush and Mike and Ben wanted to come along and call me a pedofile all night, (I think i was 19 at the time and she would have been 16) which is how it went down.
We went and saw the show, and i really only went for Katy. Totally in love. I didn't care that my roomates were threatening to call the cops and get be booked for pedofilia. The world stopped for me and Katy that night.
After the show, i bought a $10 t-shirt and met Katy, told her she was a goddess and that her songs were good but her CD was waaaaaaaay overproduced. She tried to argue with me about it but to this day I think i win that battle. She signed my shirt and i'm pretty sure she totally wanted me. Mike and Ben pulled me out practically kicking and screaming.
Either way, I floated on air the rest of the night. A few weeks later, i was over her and on to my next fad.
Time out #2. That's another characteristic of my college career...fads...there was the "we're going to start a metal band called the 'renegade outlaws'" fad, the "we're going to get passes to the weight room and work out" fad, immediately followed by the we're going to eat ben and jerrys and drink pepsi while watching movie marathons till 3 am" fad. you get the picture.
Fast forward 2+ years. I think Mike was working nights at some group home or something. Regardless, he had time on his hands to randomly surf the internet. I think we had all had a passing thought that she should have had a second CD come out sooner or later. Mike looked up Katy Hudson to find that she had moved to Paris or something and changed her name to Katy Perry.
And that was the last we'd heard from Katy Perry until that night two weeks ago at the hotel bar in Montvale, NJ.
I immediately went back to my room and downloaded both of the CD's and listened to them on the plane ride home. The music and the writing is pretty similar, but the lyrics aren't so similar at all.
So i'll leave you with the lyrics:
Faith won't fail-
You could throw me in the fire And I won’t be burned For my faith is your desire And your love endures
You could throw me in the prison cell Shackle me up against the rail But time and time again My faith won’t fail
For He’ll prevail In the midst of all my trials and tribulations And He’ll prevail In the midst of all my sin and temptations He’ll prevail When I fail and He will pick me up For time and time again My faith won’t fail
I kissed a girl
No, I don't even know your name It doesn't matter You're my experimental game Just human nature It's not what, good girls do Not how they should behave My head gets so confused Hard to obey I kissed a girl and I liked it
Well i guess i have some additional commentary, but i gotta get back to work. I'm totally going to find that shirt at my parent's house next week.
Here's a new song...a live song...but there's no denying that it's her. I actually like the song...vulnerable...innocent...just like 7 years ago. When we first fell in love. :)
So I saw mandy moore last night...i thought i would take the time to let you know how cool i am. Here's a youtube of one song...don't let it fool you...the show was bad. She was looking fine though...she liked to do this thing where she played air guitar...and this other thing where she slapped herself on the butt trying to play drums ("assdrums" if you will) and every now and again she would pull up her dress or jump or something that was just "wow". I remember/realize how i was able to stomach A Walk to Remember.
I've been real busy lately and all that stuff...most of it has to do with the fact that i'm going to shows and hanging out and working like a madman. Still, i feel bad that i haven't been able to share with everyone how awesome my life is...
i want my child to be a long-haired child....
and I'm still all about riding bikes in friends' one-bedroom apartments....
(my life could only be better if the brewers hadn't broken my heart so bad this year)
...in other news, life has been busy...real busy...monday trivia...wednesday wings (which i think is going to be replaced by mexican food tuesdays)...friday was the aaron and jonny "bowl-a-dance-dance-revolution-a-thon"...
...i go to LA next month too...and eventually back to green bay...i get another raise october 1st...al's run is next month...i still can't stay awake during movies (except for superbad...that one was pretty awesome)...
...to top it all off i got some sick concerts to go to in the next couple of months...david bazan...devendra banhart...okkervil river and damien jurado...the arcade fire...over the rhine...ryan adams...of montreal...
...the other thing i've noticed is that i really haven't been doing a great job keeping in touch with people who aren't part of my Milwaukee routine...if that's you...give me a call and we'll hang...
..since i'm an "accountant" or whatever...let met just tell you (again) that i hate taxes, and on a normal day i don't touch the crap. in fact it's been months since i've touched a tax workpaper and the last one i worked on was for my personal tax return...
...with that, tonight i had to do a 2 hour tax training. you can't even imagine how bad it was. it's really bad. anyways, after an hour an a half my computer freezes up so now i'm starting over (yes 10:00). the training needs to be done by sunday, and i won't have time before then. i also have a couple more trainings to do before then. so i'm sitting here at work still listening to this training again since i can't skip through it. therefore, i'm going to type about my summer. first, let's start with my schedule:
- this week - busy, busy, busy with work. i need to do something like 5 days of work in 3. - friday night, i'm open, so i'll want to hang (there has been talk about brewers, but i'm guessing not since it's probably sold out.) - saturday, i have a cookout during the day, and then riversplash probably at night. that's going to come together sometime later this week (possibly at wing night) - at some point in there i have to do the whole packing and cleaning thing because... - sunday, after church, at about noon, i fly out to Atlanta, GA. i'll be doing this work training thing for a week. i'll be looking for stuff to do down there, but it should be pretty busy - i fly home on friday or saturday (june 8 or 9) at which point i will attempt to make Matt and Emily's wedding. If i can't make it, i'll try to spend some time with the milwaukee clan. - the following monday and tuesday i hope to be in chicago at an SEC training for work because i need to get that done before christmas and the 11-12th are a great couple of days. - on thursday night i will be leaving milwaukee, with the understanding that i will not be back at my apartment until the weekend of July 21. (that's right kids. leaving milwaukee June 14 and Returning July 21) - I will be doing the summercamp thing for 3 weeks and then i will work for 2 weeks in green bay. (I'm sort of looking for someone who wants to go to the Over the Rhine show in Chicago on June 30, and July 14 i will be in Madison, to wish Benn and Lisa adieu before they head off to Pennsylvania)
That's right. as it turns out, i have 7 days of work that isn't training before July 9.
anyway. that's my schedule for the coming weeks. it's flexible, but as it stands now, that's where i'll be.
i also want to note how cool it was to go up north with my sister this weekend. it really was an awesome time. we had great conversation, listened to good music on the way up, and had some great heart-to-hearts. i also may have had a beer with my sister. the first time we had a beer together, was a rhinelander original the week of her birthday in the living room of our house while my parents were gone. this (our possible second) experience was even better, but i don't wan't to incriminate by telling any story of what may have gone down.
paul and alissa both think us siblings need to smoke hookah toogether. funny kids.
all-in-all there was a lot that went on this weekend and a lot of thoughts that i had about it all, but i'll spare you the narrative.
...than an unecessarily long post of how i got in the newspaper for hanging out with my pals on sunday night (drinking a beer to start the new week and exercising the mind).
